Do you need an app, or a better website?
Most businesses that ask us about app development have a specific problem. Customers phone in to book. Sales staff juggle three systems. Regulars order the same thing every week and should be able to do it in two taps. An app can fix that. Sometimes a fast mobile-friendly website does the job better, and then we say so.
An app is the right choice when users come back often, when you need push notifications, the camera, location or offline mode, or when the app is a working tool for your staff. If customers only need you once a year, website development is usually the cheaper and better route.
A good app for a smaller business:
- Does one or two things really well instead of ten things half well.
- Talks to the systems you already use, such as your till, CRM or booking system.
- Can be measured, so you know what gets used and what can go.
- Belongs to you, not to the agency that built it.
How we build an app, step by step
We do not spend a year building the finished app and then hand it over. We release a first version that is useful, then build on it based on how people actually use it.
- Call and workshop. We go through the problem the app should solve, who will use it and which systems it must connect to. The output is a short brief and a clearly scoped first version.
- UX and prototype. A clickable prototype you can try on your phone before any code is written.
- Choosing the technology. We recommend native or cross-platform development depending on what the app has to do (more below).
- Development in short sprints. You get test builds regularly, usually every two weeks, and watch the app take shape.
- Backend and APIs. We build what sits behind the app: login, database, admin and connections to your systems.
- Testing and publishing. We test on real devices and handle publishing in the App Store and Google Play, including store listings and screenshots.
- Measurement from day one. The app launches with analytics that show how it is used, without collecting personal data it does not need.
Building an app for iOS and Android rarely means two separate apps any more. Cross-platform frameworks let one codebase run on both. We choose native, meaning separate code for each platform, when the app needs heavy graphics, advanced hardware access or maximum performance.
| Cross-platform | Native |
|---|
| Codebases | One for both platforms | One per platform |
| Cost and time | Lower | Higher |
| Good for | Customer apps, booking, ordering, internal tools | Games, advanced camera or AR, heavy hardware use |
| Maintenance | One update covers both | Two parallel tracks |
For most apps we see at small and mid-sized businesses, cross-platform is the right call.
What drives the cost and timeline of building an app?
We do not publish fixed prices, because no two apps are alike. These are the factors that matter most:
- Number of screens and flows. An ordering app with five views is a very different job from one with chat, profiles, payments and a loyalty scheme.
- Integrations. Connecting to a business system, till or stock system often takes longer than the app itself.
- Login and roles. Customers, staff and admins with different permissions need more logic.
- Content and admin. If you want to edit content, offers or products yourselves, we build an interface for that.
- Platform choice. Native on both platforms costs more than a shared codebase.
That is why we start with a scoped first version: it reaches users sooner, and the rest of the budget goes into what works.
After launch: the app gets better every month
An app nobody maintains stops working. Apple and Google release new versions of iOS and Android, libraries need updating. So we work in a monthly cycle: build, measure, learn, improve.
Each month we look at how the app is used, review the results with you and decide the next improvement. It is the same approach we take with managed websites, and it means you have a partner rather than a supplier who disappears after delivery.
Why choose Almano as your app developer?
You could hire a freelancer, a traditional Nordic agency or an offshore developer. Here is how we differ:
- Swedish-speaking contact, our own team. Our founders are Swedish and you can talk to us in Swedish or English. Development is done by our own team in Nha Trang, Vietnam, which is why the price comes in below a typical Swedish agency.
- Everything in one place. An app usually ties into the website, business systems and marketing. We can handle the whole chain, so you are not coordinating five vendors.
- Privacy from the start. We build to GDPR by design and use analytics without third-party trackers.
- No lock-in. The code and accounts are yours, and you can cancel any time.
The honest caveat: Almano was founded in 2025. We do not have a long list of our apps in the stores to show you. What we can show is similar flows running live. On dentalfam.vn, a dental clinic in Nha Trang, we built an AI assistant that answers patients’ questions and books visits right on the page. That kind of booking flow is often the core of a customer app.

Tell us what the app needs to solve, and we will come back with what a first version could look like and what affects the cost. If you would rather start with your current website, run the free audit on our homepage. It often shows whether an app or a better website should come first.
